What the bass result means

A smooth transition is more informative than hearing every tone equally. Your ears are far less sensitive at the lowest frequencies, so 20 Hz will naturally seem much quieter at the same electrical level.

Clean but quiet below 40 Hz

Likely normal low-end roll-off for smaller speakers or many earbuds.

Buzz at one exact tone

Check nearby objects, earcup seals, grilles, ports, or a loose component.

Bass disappears on both sides

The device, equalizer, high-pass filter, or driver size may limit deep bass.

One side rattles

Lower volume and swap sources. A repeatable one-sided fault may indicate driver damage.

Frequently asked questions

What bass frequency should headphones reproduce?

Many good headphones reproduce useful bass to around 30–40 Hz, while low-level 20 Hz output varies. A specification alone does not tell you how loud or clean the bass is.

Why can I feel 20 Hz but barely hear it?

Very low frequencies are perceived partly as vibration and pressure. Human hearing is much less sensitive at 20 Hz, and small drivers may produce distortion instead of a strong fundamental tone.

Why does my speaker rattle during the bass test?

Lower the volume first. The cause may be a loose grille, object, cable, desk panel, damaged driver, or excessive excursion. Move nearby objects and repeat at a low level.

Can this test a subwoofer?

Yes, as a basic listening check. It can reveal whether output is present at the selected tones, but it does not measure crossover response, phase alignment, or sound pressure accurately.

Is louder bass always better?

No. Clean, controlled output matters more than maximum loudness. A strong peak can make one note impressive while hiding uneven response elsewhere.
